Plumed basilisk - Wikipedia. The plumed basilisk (Basiliscus plumifrons), also called a green basilisk, double crested basilisk, or Jesus Christ lizard, is a species of corytophanid native to Central America. Geographic range. Alajuela Province, Costa Rica. Plumed basilisks are one of the largest basilisk species, with an average body length of approximately 1. Including the tail, they can reach 3 feet (9. Adult lizards are brilliant green with bright yellow eyes and small bluish spots along the dorsal ridge. Basilisk Lizard Care And Information;. Basiliscus plumifrons is one of the larger basilisk species. Tres Leches;. Diet: Omnivore; Three basilisk lizard species, the common basilisk. Emerald basilisk (Basiliscus plumifrons). The plumed basilisk (Basiliscus plumifrons), also called a green basilisk, double crested basilisk, or Jesus Christ lizard, is a species of corytophanid native to. Green (Plumed) Basiliscus plumifrons; Common B. Basiliscus basiliscus. The common basilisk grows to 80 cm. Basilisks enjoy a. Males have three crests: one on the head, one on their back, and one on the tail while the females only have the head crest. The eggs hatch after eight to ten weeks, at which point the young emerge as fully independent lizards. Behaviour. Most basilisks are skittish, and do not tolerate much handling when kept in captivity. This lizard is able to run short distances across water using both its feet and tail for support, an ability shared with other basilisks and the Malaysian sail- finned lizard, Hydrosaurus amboinensis. Although they're primarily carnivorous, Green basilisks (Basiliscus plumifrons) -- also known as plumed basilisks -- are considered to be omnivores as they can eat a. Green Crested Basilisk. Basiliscus plumifrons. Of the four basilisk species. Diet: Insects, spiders, smaller lizards, small mammals. Name: Green Basilisk; Basiliscus plumifrons Size: 80 centimeters (30 inches) Range: Central America Diet: Insects and other invertebrates; seeds, fruits and leaves. In Costa Rica, this has earned the plumed basilisk the nickname . It is also an excellent swimmer and can stay under water for up to 3. Basilisk Lizard Care And Information. By Text and photos by Bert Langerwerf. In December 1. 98. I visited Panama to collect brown basilisks for a breeder colony. I saw a few crossing a muddy river in Panama City and wanted them as breeders. I swam to the other side near a bridge in town. I saw a naked Indian under the bridge washing himself, and he thought that I came to do likewise. This meant, . I felt a hard bite - harder than a basilisk bite would be - on one finger. I yanked my hand out immediately, and there was a big crab hanging from my finger, pinching it. This meant, . I worked with three out of the four existing species, including the green or plumed basilisk (Basiliscus plumifrons), common or brown basilisk (B. I never tried to breed the mostly imported striped basilisk (B. They have beautiful bodies, especially the green basilisks. I only stopped breeding them because during the mid- 1. These lizards dwell along riverbanks and other water basins that provide sufficient sun exposure. Overgrown trees, reeds and other vegetation provide typical habitat. They engage in head bobbing and lots of climbing. They are good swimmers and can also hide underwater when threatened. Wild basilisks are also known to run on water, an ability that garnered them the nickname: Jesus lizard. This species can adapt to a wide variety of habitats, but they are commonly found in drier areas up to 4,9. Temperatures in B. A rainy season occurs in June through October, producing 4 to 7 inches of rain per month. Basiliscus vittatus reaches nearly 2. SVL) of 6. 8 inches. Males have a large crest on the head and a small crest on the back. They keep to the lowlands, where the temperature remains fairly constant, with cooler temperature ranges of 6. Like striped basilisks, greens experience a distinct rainy season in their range, lasting from June to October. Basiliscus plumifrons is one of the larger basilisk species (along with the common basilisk) and can attain total lengths of up to 3. SVL of approximately 9. I heard of one specimen that was reportedly 3. Males sport crests on the head, back and tail. It can be found at elevations up to 2,9. Climate and rain patterns in its range are similar to those in the greens' range. They average 3. 2 inches in total length, and SVL is approximately 9. This species is sexually mature at a SVL of 4. Typical of basilisks, males again possess a crest on the head, back and tail. The smallest of the basilisks, B. Males have a large crest on the head. Little is known about the habitat preferences of the red- headed basilisk. Temperatures in its range are between 6. Rainfall averages 9 to 1. January and March; during the rest of the year, the region receives relatively little rain. If possible, outdoor enclosures are ideal for them. Captive Care. Basilisks are rather jumpy, but do fine in captivity when kept appropriately. They do not tolerate much handling. During the winter months, if necessary, basilisks should be brought indoors. I live in Alabama and kept all my basilisks outside from mid- April through mid- October. These cages were partially sunk 2 to 3 feet into the ground to help maintain a stable temperature. Basiliscus galeritus and B. These are minimum cage sizes; the larger the setup, the better. Temperatures for captive specimens should mirror the temperatures found in the lizards' native habitat. Be sure any branches you place in their enclosures are clean and free of parasites. In addition to sturdy climbing branches, provide a large water bowl. This will need regular cleaning, as these lizards defecate in their water. This does often make general enclosure cleanup easier, however. I always kept my outdoor basilisks on normal soil. Peat, sphagnum or mulch can be used as substrates for indoor enclosures. I recommend UVB lights made specifically for lizards (rather than UV lamps for plants). A basking hot spot, which can be provided by a spot light, should be heated to the mid- 9. Ambient temperatures should be in the 8. Keep in mind that keeping any reptile in an evironment that is too moist can lead to bacterial or fungal infections; even the most water- loving herps want to dry out their bodies from time to time in the sun or under a lamp. Vegetable matter, including seeds, fruits, berries and leaves form a smaller portion of the wild diet. Crickets are also accepted. Any insects offered should be gut- loaded with vegetables that are high in carotenes (commercial gut- loading diets are available as well). I recommend that indoor basilisks receive some calcium/mineral/vitamin supplements too. Breeding Notes. I recommended keeping breeder basilisks year- round in groups of one male and two or three females. To stimulate breeding, mine were given a two- to three- month dry period during the winter. When basilisks are ready to breed, courtship behaviors observed are the usual head bobbing, etc. In fact, basilisks and most lizards prefer black garden soil to sand for nesting. I noticed this again and again, when I had part of the terrarium (while breeding them indoors during the winter) set up with play sand and the rest with soil. I found that the lizards almost always avoided the sand and laid their eggs in the garden soil. If you have breeding basilisks, place a large bucket of garden soil inside their enclosure, in which the gravid female can lay her eggs. In December 1. 98. Dr. Mark Paris and I visited Panama and obtained export permits for a number of common basilisk breeding pairs. I bred these lizards from 1. During this time, I was building Agama International and had limited time to make notes. Therefore, my notes on incubation periods are lacking. Eggs hatched approximately three months after breeding. Based on my records of hatching dates (see table), the results of the outdoor copulations were almost three times more successful than the indoor pairings. The eggs were white when laid, but turned yellow after one to two weeks. I incubated the eggs in moist vermiculite, and they were completely covered in this medium. I did not weigh the water or vermiculite; I added water to the vermiculite until it felt slightly moist, like garden soil. Literature puts the incubation period at 6. Fahrenheit and 1. Green Basilisk. Because of the greater demand for green basilisks, I started breeding them in 1. Maximum breeding activity occurred June through August. During their time indoors, they bred most readily during January. The clutch sizes varied from five to 1. I incubated the eggs at 8. Fahrenheit in moist vermiculite. One time, the eggs were exposed for a short period to a temperature of 7. The average was 6. Virtually nothing was known about this species' reproduction. This encouraged me to take extra notes. Breeding took place about three and a half months prior to hatching. The majority of breeding activity happened from mid- April through mid- September. All young were born from August to January, which means that the only successful breeding attempts were those that took place outdoors. I collected eggs in the indoor setups, but they never hatched (unlike the eggs from B. The number of eggs in these clutches was not very large; most clutches had five eggs. The egg size was nearly the same as that of B. I also measured the incubation period 1. These recorded incubation periods were, from shortest to longest: 6. The average incubation period was 7. B. They were 3. 5 inches long (SVL of 1. SVL of 1. 7 inches). Twenty to 3. 0 young were kept in these setups. The back wall of these cages had four to five heavily used hideboxes located at different levels. I kept young basilisks on regular soil or dirt (topsoil) indoors and out. We used paint roller trays as water bowls for the young, because they are inexpensive, readily available and their built- in . When the babies were outside, these water bowls were always placed in the shade, as the sun would overheat the water. If the young jumped into sun- heated water that was too hot, they could die. During winter months, we avoided putting cold water into the bowls; otherwise, the babies could become paralyzed and drown. I tried to keep night temperatures above 6. Indoors, I maintained the young in the 6. I also provided the previously mentioned UVB lighting and a hot spot. Despite the supplements, the babies that were reared indoors began cramping up and seemed paralyzed. It became clear that these youngsters somehow could not make use of the vitamin D3 and needed UVB lights or direct sunshine in order to prevent cramping, which is a sign of calcium deficiency. These lizards are best kept as a show animal in a well- planted vivarium with lots of branches; they are not suited to handling. Second is the common basilisk. The red- headed basilisk is the most delicate of the species and is only suitable for more advanced terrarium keepers. This species is also harder to find in the pet trade. Basilisk Health Concerns. Like other lizards, basilisks can suffer from parasites, ranging from nematodes to flagellates and coccidia. A thorough vet exam is highly advised for newly purchased animals, especially if they are wild caught. These leaves are a natural source of vitamin A (carotenes) for the animals in the wild. If basilisks are kept in the terrarium, they often receive insects that do not have enough carotenes. When the enclosure is dry and dusty, this quickly leads to blurred eyes and eye infections. The dust irritates the eyes, while the lack of vitamin A reduces the ability to fend off parasites. While it is possible to overdose on vitamin A, I highly recommend gut- loading prey items with carrots, sweet potatoes, tomatoes or leaves. A panicky basilisk will run with full speed into glass and hurt its nose. Rostral trauma can be followed by disease, when wounds on the nose become infected. The best way to prevent such injuries is by limiting the number of glass walls in the basilisk enclosure to only the front (with the other walls being wood, plastic, etc.) and to provide sufficient hiding places, so that the animals feel secure.

Accepting the NEJM cookie is. This Hormone Makes Counting Calories Irrelevant. By Ron Rosedale, M. D. It is amazing how the little twists and turns of researchers can have such a profound impact on what we generally come to realize as “scientific truth.” Let me share a recent fascinating example of how this impacted one of the most powerful hormones in your body. The Ob mouse is a strain of mouse that has a genetic mutation that makes it obese and unhealthy. It has been used for many years as a model of obesity to do research on, though the reason that it was obese had eluded scientists. This changed when, in 1. Jeffrey Friedman discovered that this mouse lacked a previously unknown hormone called leptin, and when it was injected with leptin it became thin, vibrant, and very healthy within weeks. This made headlines around the world, . This did not last long. When people were tested for leptin, it was found that, unlike the Ob mouse, they did not lack leptin; on the contrary almost all overweight and obese people have excess leptin. These people were . The financial disappointment was extreme and scientists working for pharmaceutical companies said that leptin wasn't important anymore since they could not find a drug to control it, and therefore the industry couldn't make money on it. To make big money in medicine one needs a patent and this generally means remedies which are not commonly or easily available - - that are not natural. This illustrates two extremely unfortunate principles in modern medicine; only those therapies that will make lots of money (generally for the pharmaceutical industry or hospitals), ever get pursued and then taught to physicians (since most of medical education after medical school takes place by drug reps), and these therapies, almost by definition, will be unnatural. This inhibition of extremely important knowledge is not only unfortunate, it is deadly, and is exemplified by how few people, including doctors, know anything about leptin, though I would consider it to be the most important chemical in your body that will determine your health and lifespan. Two Hormones that are Vital for Optimal Health. Each and every one of us is a combination of lives within lives. We are made up of trillions of individual living cells that each must maintain itself. Even more significantly, the cells must communicate and interact with each other to form a republic of cells that we call our individual self. Our health and life depends on how accurately instructions are conveyed to our cells so that they can act in harmony. It is the communication among the individual cells that will determine our health and our life. The communication takes place by hormones. Arguably therefore, the most important molecules in your body that ultimately will decide your health and life are hormones. Many would say that genes and chromosomes are the most important molecules, however once born your genes pretty much just sit there; hormones tell them what to do. Certainly, the most important message that our cells receive is how and what to do with energy, and therefore life cannot take place without that. The two most important hormones that deliver messages about energy and metabolism are insulin and leptin. Metabolism can roughly be defined as the chemistry that turns food into life, and therefore insulin and leptin are critical to health and disease. Both insulin and leptin work together to control the quality of your metabolism (and, to a significant extent, the rate of metabolism). Insulin works mostly at the individual cell level, telling the vast majority of cells whether to burn or store fat or sugar and whether to utilize that energy for maintenance and repair or reproduction. This is extremely important as we shall see, for on an individual cell level turning on maintenance and repair equates to increased longevity, and turning up cellular reproduction can increase your risk of cancer. Leptin, on the other hand, controls the energy storage and utilization of the entire republic of cells allowing the body to communicate with the brain about how much energy (fat) the republic has stored, and whether it needs more, or should burn some off, and whether it is an advantageous time nutritionally- speaking for the republic - -you- - to reproduce or not. What Exactly is Leptin? Leptin is a very powerful and influential hormone produced by fat cells that has totally changed the way that science (real science, outside of medicine) looks at fat, nutrition, and metabolism in general. Prior to leptin's discovery, fat was viewed as strictly an ugly energy storage depot that most everyone was trying to get rid of. After it was discovered that fat produced the hormone leptin (and subsequently it was discovered that fat produced other very significant hormones), fat became an endocrine organ like the ovaries, pancreas and pituitary, influencing the rest of the body and, in particular, the brain. Leptin, as far as science currently knows, is the most powerful regulator that tells your brain what to do about life's two main biological goals: eating and reproduction. Your fat, by way of leptin, tells your brain whether you should be hungry, eat and make more fat, whether you should reproduce and make babies, or (partly by controlling insulin) whether to . I believe I could now make a very convincing and scientifically accurate statement that that rather than your brain being in control of the rest of your body, your brain is, in fact, subservient to your fat - - and leptin. In short, leptin is the way that your fat stores speak to your brain to let your brain know how much energy is available and, very importantly, what to do with it. Therefore, leptin may be . It appeared that when one tried to lose weight the body would try to gain it back. This commonly results in . It has long been theorized that there must be a hormone that determines this. Science points now to leptin as being that hormone. In our ancestral history, it was advantageous to store some fat to call upon during times of famine. However, it was equally disadvantageous to be too fat. For most of our evolutionary history, it was necessary to run, to obtain prey and perhaps most importantly, to avoid being prey. If a lion was chasing a group of people it would most likely catch and eliminate from the gene pool the slowest runner and the one who could not make it up the tree - - the fattest one. Thus, fat storage had to be highly regulated and this is done, as is any regulation, through hormones, the most significant being leptin. If a person is getting too fat, the extra fat produces more leptin which is supposed to tell the brain that there is too much fat stored, more should not be stored, and the excess should be burned. Signals are therefore sent to an area of the brain in the hypothalamus (the arcuate nucleus) to stop being hungry, to stop eating, to stop storing fat and to start burning some extra fat off. Controlling hunger is a major (though not the only) way that leptin controls energy storage. Hunger is a very powerful, ancient, and deep- seated drive that, if stimulated long enough, will make you eat and store more energy. Asking somebody to not eat, to voluntarily restrict calories even though they are hungry, is asking the near impossible. The only way to eat less in the long- term is to not be hungry, and the only way to do this is to control the hormones that regulate hunger, the primary one being leptin. How Leptin Resistance Leads to Disease. More recently, it has been found that leptin not only changes brain chemistry, but can also . I'm not aware of any other chemical in the body that has been shown to accomplish this . Further studies have now shown that leptin, or more correctly the inability of the body to properly hear leptin’s signals, in other words leptin resistance, plays significant if not primary roles in heart disease, obesity, diabetes, osteoporosis, autoimmune diseases, reproductive disorders, and perhaps the rate of aging itself. It helps to control the brain areas that regulate thyroid levels and the sympathetic nervous system which also has huge impacts on blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis and aging. Leptin's stimulatory effect on the sympathetic nervous system also helps determine the adrenal stress response including cortisol levels. Leptin May Be Even More Critical Than Insulin. The importance of insulin in health and disease is becoming well- known. Aside from its obvious role in diabetes, it plays a very significant role in hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. I was one of the first to speak publicly to doctors about insulin’s critical role in health well over a decade ago (see the transcribed talk Insulin and its Metabolic Effects) and I am even more convinced now. However leptin may even supersede insulin in importance, for new research is revealing that in the long run glucose and therefore insulin levels may be largely determined by leptin. It had been previously believed that the insulin sensitivity of muscle and fat tissues were the most important factor in determining whether one would become diabetic or not. Elegant new studies are showing that the brain and liver are most important in regulating a person’s blood sugar levels especially in type 2 or insulin resistant diabetes. It should be noted again that leptin plays a vital role in regulating your brain’s hypothalamic activity which in turn regulates much of a person’s . Another very recent study reveals leptin's importance in directly regulating how much sugar that the liver manufactures via gluconeogenesis. Many chronic diseases are now linked to excess inflammation such as heart disease and diabetes. High leptin levels are very pro- inflammatory, and leptin also helps to mediate the manufacture of other very potent inflammatory chemicals from fat cells that also play a significant role in the progression of heart disease and diabetes. June 2. 01. 7Spring migration at the Pointe de Grave. The 3. 4th season of counts at the Pointe de Grave, a natural funnel for north- moving migrants on the west coast of France, where the Gironde enters the sea, has recently ended. From the beginning of March to the end of May, a team of watchers counts the migrants passing through, to monitor populations changes, but at the same time to explain to the visiting public the importance of the site. Jean- Paul Urcun, the coordinator for the LPO, has sent me a summary of some of the highlights, starting on 6th March when a storm brought exceptional numbers of gulls close to the shore, plus a day- record of seven Great Skuas. Later the same day, with rain continuing to fall, an arrival of passerine migrants included 2. Chaffinches and 3.
Meadow Pipits in the space of just two hours. In April it was time for migrants from Africa to appear, including Cuckoos, Purple Herons, Montagu's Harriers, Black Kites and Hobbies. In May, the numbers of hirundines peaked – 1. Swallows on the 4th and 7. House Martins on 9th – with daily counts of Swifts as high as 2. Among record counts for the season as a whole, Spoonbills totalled 3. Chaffinches 5. 5,0. Purple Herons 3. 36, Bee- eaters 1. Yellow Wagtails 3. Other encouraging totals, for which one has to go back 2. Serin with 3. 27. Golden Oriole with 4. Hopefully a sign of an upturn in their fortunes? Rarities included three Pallid Harriers, a Black- shouldered Kite, six Red- footed Falcons, single Egyptian and Griffon Vultures and a Velvet Scoter. In total 1. 82 species were recorded during the season, of which 1. Clearly the Pointe de Grave is one of Europe's most important spring migration sites, well worth a visit if you have the chance. But don't forget that counts at the Col d'Organbidexka, in the Pyrenees, for migrants returning south, start on 1. July and continue to 1. November. 1. 9 June 2. Stonechats in Alsace. The LPO group in Alsace, among its many other activities, carried out a survey of the numbers of Stonechats breeding in its area in 2. It is encouraging to note that the estimated population rose from 2. France as a whole over the same period. The species seems to have benefited locally from a series of mild winters, and also by adapting to new habitats in the area. Each year, the group chooses a 'bird of the year' for special study – this year it is the House Martin, also the target of surveys in the UK under the auspices of the BTO, as numbers seem to be declining in both France and the UK. May 2. 01. 7Ringing data from France. The CRBPO (Centre de Recherche sur la Biologie des Populations d’Oiseaux) is the body in France that coordinates the activities of the network of the ringers active in France (over 4. The results of their work are steadily being digitised and, at least from the year 2. The introduction and instructions are in English, and it is possible to consult the data in either map or statistical format. The maps are perhaps the easiest to understand, with data shown separately for ringing recoveries, and for resightings/recaptures. The list of species can be searched by common name or by scientific name. Note that for species which have been ringed in large numbers (e. Barn Swallow), you may have to wait for some time for the results to appear. Also the sightings are mapped with varying degrees of precision, and some of the non- French ones may just be centralised on the country concerned. Out of interest I picked a couple of species where there are enough data to show some reliable patterns, Red Kite and Great White Egret. For the former, the annual migration north- east/south- west is very clear, with just a couple of resightings of birds marked in the UK found in France at a later date. For Great White Egret, the movement of birds from Hungary and elsewhere in eastern Europe to France, primarily in the winter, is shown clearly, with the dispersal of those now breeding in western France northwards to Britain and the Netherlands also very evident. There are hours of endless fun to be had here! February 2. 01. 7Illegal trapping, the LPO and the Law. On 9th November 2. LPO, including their President, Allain Bougrain Dubourg, were in the Landes region of south- west France, on their now annual trip to gather evidence of the illegal trapping of small birds during the autumn migration period. As usual there were altercations with the local trappers, but on this occasion it took a new turn in that they were attacked by a man wielding a spade and wearing little more than his underpants. Not unsurprisingly in this day and age the subsequent images went viral. The case has recently now come to court, and the people involved in the illegal trapping have been fined 1. Their hunting permits were withdrawn for up to a year, although they all gave undertakings that they would not be trapping again in future, and their weapons, including the famous spade, were confiscated. It is encouraging to see that the judiciary are applying the law rigorously, especially in a region where local politicians are often willing to turn a blind eye. The case will be considered again in April, but one hopes that the adverse publicity so far will act as an additional deterrent to practitioners of this out- moded 'tradition'. January 2. 01. 7White- tailed Eagle returns as a breeding species. Although White- tailed Eagles continued to breed in Corsica until the middle of the 2. France some time in the 1. In recent years, as is well- known, they have become regular winter visitors to several sites around the country, the most notable being the huge lakes in the Champagne- Ardenne region of north- east France. However, birds are also regularly seen at the Lac de Madine and the Etang de Lindre in Lorraine, so it was not a great surprise when one, and later a second bird, arrived at the latter site in the late autumn/early winter of 2. However, when both birds were still present in April and May 2. August of that year, albeit a very early date for a returning winter migrant. The area is a vast one, much less visited by birders in the summer, and this species, although huge, can keep a very low profile during the breeding season. Up to four individuals were seen during the next winter, followed by some very intermittent sightings of two birds, only one of which was a full adult, during the summer of 2. It was quite a surprise, therefore, when two juveniles were seen with the two older birds in August, and when the nest was located in the following winter, it could be confirmed that a successful breeding event had at last occurred. Since then, there have been two failed attempts in 2. Hopefully the Etang de Lindre will provide a base camp for further colonisation. A full account of these events can be read in Ornithos 2. January 2. 01. 7Big Garden Birdwatch. The weekend of 2. January is when the RSPB- run Big Garden Birdwatch takes place in the UK, when we are all encouraged to spend an hour in our gardens, counting all the birds that appear there during that time. By running this survey, which is simple to do and attracts a huge number of observers, comparisons can be made between years concerning the populations of our most familiar birds. Sometimes changes in numbers reflect actual population changes, sometimes the severity of the weather plays a big part. During the same weekend, the French will be doing the same thing – the slightly less snappily named 'week- end national de comptage des oiseaux des jardins'. The results will be added to the ongoing survey of garden birds (see the survey's website), where people are encouraged to make similar one- hour counts all through the year. On their site there is a map (carte des jardins) showing the distribution of the nearly 2. They are well spread across the country, although there are clear concentrations around major towns and cities. A few maps showing a sample of the species recorded during the survey are also of interest. January 2. 01. 7Ortolan migration. As has appeared here and here before, each autumn the LPO (and other conservation organisations such as CABS) have gone to the Landes area of south- west France to draw attention to the illegal trapping of small birds still prevalent there, particularly of Ortolans, although other small birds are also caught. One of the reasons that the trappers claim that it is acceptable to catch this species, which has seriously declined in numbers in western Europe, is that these particular migrants actually come from much further east, in Russia, where there are still healthy populations. So that's alright then! In the light of this assertion it was interesting to come across the results of a very detailed study carried out by Fr. The full article can be downloaded here and although it's in French, the various maps can easily be understood without much knowledge of the language, and at the end there is an update, in English, on the latest population estimates country by country. The methodology inevitably occupies quite a bit of space, but as far as migration is concerned, the key results can be summarised as follows. There are two principal migration routes, one eastern, one western. The first concerns the birds breeding in Russia, and everywhere east of a line from Belarus to Serbia, taken by an estimated 4 million pairs (rounding the figures somewhat), around 9. European population, to winter on the plateaus of Ethiopia and Eritrea. The western route, involving just 1. European population, around 5. Diet and Exercise for Stronger, Healthier Bones. If you think of your body as a building, your bones are the framing. Without strong bones the whole thing would collapse. And that's a good analogy for what happens when we don't take good care of our bones. Over time, the body loses more and more bone, until we develop osteoporosis and it . By the time you're 1. Most people continue to build bone faster than they lose it until about age 3. From then on, the rate of bone building slows down and the rate of bone loss picks up. You can't get back bone once it's lost, but you can help maximize bone formation and minimize bone loss, which can lead to osteoporosis. Researchers estimate that things you have no control over - - such as genetic factors, sex, age, and race - - control about 5. But you can help protect your bones and reduce the risk of osteoporosis in two key ways: nutrition and exercise. Diabetes is a group of disorders characterized by chronic high blood glucose levels (hyperglycemia) due to the body's failure to produce any or enough insulin to.Nutrition for Strong Bones. If you want to build stronger bones, you need three key elements: calcium, protein, and vitamin D. Bones are largely made up of a protein - - collagen - - bound together by calcium and other trace minerals). Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium so it can do its job building strong bones. In 2. 01. 0, the Institute of Medicine released new guidelines as to just how much calcium and vitamin D people need. Most adults, should get between 6. IUs) of vitamin D every day, and between 1,0. The higher levels are for postmenopausal women, adolescent girls, and women who are pregnant or nursing. Continued“It's pretty easy to figure out how much calcium you're getting,” says Deborah Sellmeyer, MD, medical director of the Johns Hopkins Metabolic Bone Center. To get up to what you need - - whether it's about 1,0.
There are lots of ways to get plenty of calcium in your diet. Dairy products like milk, yogurt, and cheese have plenty of calcium, as well as protein. Other options include: Fortified juices, cereals, and oatmeal. Beans and legumes. Unfortunately, the 10 percent myth remains both popular and persistent. It has been repeated in popular culture in everything from advertisements to television. There are many reasons that more than one million people have discovered the benefits of Craftmatic® Brand Adjustable Beds. For those with trouble getting into the. Dark leafy greens, like broccoli and bok choy. Salmon and sardines with bones. Certain nuts, such as almonds“You can pick and choose from a wide variety of sources, and can vary it day by day. On the days when you don't get as much calcium, you can take a supplement, such as calcium citrate,” says Sellmeyer. For vitamin D, often called the key that unlocks calcium in your body, the Institute of Medicine recommends between 6. IU per day. That's harder to get, because our bodies mostly synthesize vitamin D in response to sunlight. Good sources of vitamin D include: Eggs. Fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, and tuna. Cod liver oil. Fortified dairy products. Fortified cereals. Beef liver. Fortified orange juice. The IOM's recommendations about vitamin D have, in fact, been somewhat controversial. Many bone experts suggest that they're on the low end of optimal. Your diet should contain plenty of lean protein sources, such as lean meats and fish, beans, and cheese. Continued. Exercise Your Right to Strong Bones. One way to see just how important exercise is to bone health is to look at what happens to bone strength when people don't exercise.“People who have been put on bed rest, people who undergo limb immobilizations, and astronauts, who have very reduced physical activity because of the minimal actions of gravity and muscles pulling on the bone - - they all see a rapid and profound effect on the skeletal system,” says Wendy Kohrt, Ph. D, a professor of medicine and the director of research for geriatric medicine at the University of Colorado. It takes a very long time to get that back.”Kohrt says the evidence shows that weight- bearing exercise can build about 1% to 3% of bone. That may not sound like a lot, but exercise may also strengthen existing bone in ways that are harder to quantify. Research from the landmark Nurses' Health Study (NHANES) shows that women who walk at least four hours per week reduce their risk of hip fracture by about 4. Weight- bearing exercises include walking, dancing, jogging, playing tennis. Swimming, although it's a wonderful exercise in many ways, doesn't particularly benefit bone health because it isn't a weight- bearing activity.“I think that just being physically active, being up on your feet and doing a variety of things, probably has benefits that we can't necessarily measure if we study a small group of subjects over a brief interval of time like one year,” says Kohrt. Tops on the no- no list: smoking. Significant bone loss has been found in men and women who smoke, and the more and longer you smoke, the greater your risk of fracture. Some studies even suggest that secondhand smoke exposure in youth can increase the risk of low bone mass as an adult. Continued. If you're wondering about your bone health, there's a quick at- home test you can take that will assess your overall risk of fracture. Called FRAX, it was developed by the World Health Organization to help evaluate bone fracture risk. Just plug a few numbers into the calculator - - like your age, height, weight, and some information such as whether you smoke or take steroid medications - - and it will give you a percentage risk of having a bone fracture within the next 1. No matter what number you get, however, it's always worth trying to bring it even lower with healthy lifestyle habits. Your bones support you, and they need you to support them. Sources.
